I am the Photographer that took this picture. I used to have an un-watermarked version of this photo on the home page of my website. Someone decided to “share” it so they illegally copied it from my website and posted it online. Now it’s been shared on Facebook and pinned on Pinterest over 10,000 times!

While I’m thrilled that one of my images has gotten so much attention, it’s also upsetting that so many people have shared this photograph without anyone even knowing that it’s mine.

I don’t mind when my photos are shared online, because it means A. People like my work and B. Exposure to new people and potentially new clients. Now, if you’re still reading, I’ll fiil you in on the rest of the story. This is MY Son. His Father or Mother didn’t die serving their country, we are alive and well I assure you.

I did this photo shoot with my then 4 year old Son on Memorial Day weekend 2010, in an effort to start teaching him about war, the military and sacrafice. I took him to this cemetery, and tried to explain to him who was buried there. We brought a dozen white and red roses, and I told him to lay one rose at twelve different, random grave sites, and to salute each one.

It never even occurred to me at the time that a total stranger might see some of the photos and assume that the boy in the photo was saluting his Father/Mother. But once again, after the image was taken from my website, it was open to interpretation.

I have the utmost respect for our military. A lot of my customers are in the military, and the sacrafices that they make are beyond words. I will never take our freedoms for granted, and I hope to raise our Son with the same respect.
